Friday, September 26th, the Indianapolis Chapter of PFLAG hosted its first Straight for Equality Party. We wanted to introduce our straight allies to the new initiative that PFLAG has undertaken, which is to teach straight people who don't have a connection with the GLBT community, how to support and advocate for that community.
Our members invited over 50 people to the event. We were happily surprised with a packed house. While enjoying appetizers, drinks and desserts, guests mingled and got to know each other. Brooke Smith and Rhodes Perry from National PFLAG, as well as Deb Smith from PFLAG Michigan, were on hand to answer questions and inform guests about PFLAG's mission.
Rhodes Perry and Brooke Smith of PFLAG NationalLater on in the evening, Brooke spoke to the assembled guests and explained the Straight for Equality initiative. She explained that many people want to support the GLBT community, but don't know how. Straight for Equality empowers allies in supporting and advocating for GLBT people in three primary arenas: our homes, our workplaces and our communities. If there is a place where you can talk to someone else, there's an opportunity to put some of the things you get from Straight for Equality into action. Things like objecting to gay jokes, challenging stereotypes, or paying attention to where a candidate stands on equality issues and making your opinion heard with your vote. She asked people to take the Straight for Equality pledge, which is the first step in showing support for equality.

Indianapolis has one of the best PFLAG chapters in the nation. The driving force behind Indy PFLAG is stellar. I'm glad to see ya'll getting support and attention from the national chapter. The PFLAG model works so well, I wish other orgs would adopt it.
