While I was kind of expecting this announcement sooner or later, it still comes as a shock to imagine neither Tammara Tracey or Mary Byrne at Out Word Bound books. The dynamic partners have opted to sell Indianapolis' only LGBT bookstore. The women explained their decision in an e-mail sent to Bilerico-Indiana:
After a long discussion and plenty of introspect, Mary and I need to sell the bookstore. We both have full time jobs and other significant time commitments in our lives, jointly and separate. We simply do not have enough time to fulfill all of these obligations at the quality level each deserves or demands.
We both believe that Out Word Bound is an important element of the LGBTQ community and the larger community as well; but the community deserves and the bookstore needs more attention and energy than we can muster. Therefore, while all is going well, we'd like to pass OWB on to more energetic spirits to take it to the next level.
They are asking $85,000 for the inventory and fixtures. Inquiries should contact Esther Fuller at (317) 796-0929.
I hope someone steps up soon and rescues the shop to ensure Indianapolis has a family-friendly gathering place. Since Indy lacks an LGBT center, Out Word Bound is often used for organizational meetings, small group activities and social gatherings. With so many private booksellers falling to the Amazon.com and Borders/Barnes & Nobles juggernauts, the local LGBT bookstore has been one of the first casualties; we can't allow that to happen here.
