Gay Republican blogger Gary Welsh's recent post "To My Gay Friends" asks why the queer community is overwhelmingly supporting Barack Obama's campaign for president. He spouts more "Obama is a Muslim! And from Africa!" nonsense and closes with, "Is this the kind of leadership you want for America?"

I'm not sure that I qualify as one of Gary's friends - gay or not - but, as a LGBTforObama blogger, I'd feel remiss if I didn't respond. Yes, Obama provides the exactly type of leadership I admire and want; John McCain doesn't. As fellow Obama blogger Michael Crawford says in his post, "Gays Won't Let Friends Vote McCain":

McCain opposes non-discrimination legislation that would protect LGBT people from being fired from their jobs simply for who they are.

McCain opposes federal hate crimes legislation that would add sexual orientation and gender identity to existing federal law and provide resources to local law enforcement agencies to better investigate hate crimes.

McCain opposes the legal recognition of same-sex relationships including marriage, civil unions and domestic partnerships.

McCain opposes the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act
which denies the federal rights and responsibilities of marriage from being extended to same-sex couples.

McCain opposes adoption by LGBT people even if it means that kids who need families will remain in orphanages.

McCain supports the ban on openly gay soldiers serving in the military.

McCain would appoint Supreme Court justices that would take anti-LGBT stances like John Roberts and Samuel Alito.

McCain has chosen Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate and she may be even more anti-LGBT than McCain is.

When it comes to LGBT civil rights, we cannot afford to have John McCain and Sarah Palin in the White House.

And just to make it perfectly clear, I'll allow Senator McCain to tell Gary himself that he supports a state marriage amendment - just like state legislator Brian Bosma and Eric Miller of rightwing org Advance America support here in Indiana.

Which begs the question, while Gary has repeatedly attacked Barack Obama with the same smears that the media, civil rights leaders, LGBT organizations, Karl Rove and even John McCain himself have branded as untrue, insulting and bigoted while never advocating for a McCain presidency...

What could drive a man to vote against his community, his pocketbook and his own pet cause and for a candidate he doesn't actually support?
