Patrons who crowded into the Northside News Cafe and gathered at Aristocrat Pub & Restaurant near Broad Ripple talked of a new era, one they hoped would celebrate diversity.

"I have multiracial grandchildren," said Sarah Patterson, 69, a member of the Indianapolis chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, which met at the Aristocrat, 5212 N. College Ave. "This makes the world a better place for them."

Patterson, who thinks Barack Obama's presidency will advance efforts for equal rights for all people, celebrated the inauguration with other PFLAG members and friends.

As they lunched, a cardboard cutout of Obama looked on.

PFLAG member Annette Gross, 58, Carmel, brought it from home.

"I've kept my yard signs, my buttons, my hat. It's history," she said.
