Here's an interesting concept you don't see very often. There's an intersex puppet show playing at IndyFringe this week.
The unfortunate title character of this puppet-centered operetta, whose story comes from an incident in 18th century Scotland, was abandoned at birth and raised by nuns who, in effect, told her to skip over her damaged area -- to identify as a single female servant despite having both male and female genitals.
The forced avoidance lets her be hired as a kitchen maid at a large estate, where the landlord's lonely single daughter befriends her. The unlikely soul mates become lovers, and the daughter's pregnancy reveals Black Bonnet's secret. Her subsequent execution has the locked-into-place cruelty of a fairy tale.
The next performance is at 9pm on Tuesday.
